ISTANBUL,— Following an evaluation of the
monthly state of detentions, Istanbul 3rd High
Criminal Court has ruled the release of seven
Kurdish journalists tried in the KCK (Kurdistan
Communities Union) main trial in Istanbul.
The 7 Kurdish journalists, who have been in jail for
29 months within the scope of "Kurdistan Communities
Union (KCK) Press Committee" and were were arrested
in the operations against Kurdish press foundations
like Dicle News Agency (DİHA), Daily Özgür Gündem,
Daily Azadiya Welat,www.Ekurd.net
Democratic Modernity journal and Firat News Agency
ANF, were released by the Istanbul 3rd Heavy Penalty
Court.
Ramazan Demir, one of the defendant attorneys in the
case, told bianet “Of course, we are happy to hear
this but this ruling could be issued when they were
detained in the first place maybe a month or a year
ago. Since they were arrested, no single progress
was made on their case files. This way, they were
only deprived of their freedoms. Of course, the
court released them pending a trial, so the trial
will still resume,”
The released journalists are: Mikail Barut, Nurettin
Fırat, Ertuş Bozkurt, Turabi Kişin, Ramazan Pekgöz,
Yüksel Genç and Davut Uçar.
Journalist Mikail Barut will reportedly remain
jailed in relation with a sentence he received in
another case.
Need to be mentioned that on March 26, 2014 Eight journalists have been
released in KCK press case, and 37
politicians in the KCK main trial in Istanbul.
The
KCK-trial began on October 18, 2010 when a Turkish
court began the trial
of 152 high profile Kurdish politicians and rights defenders,
accused of being the urban wing of the outlawed
separatist Kurdish PKK rebels.
KCK, is the political wing of the Kurdistan Workers'
Party PKK.
Ankara launched clandestine peace talks with the PKK
in 2012. The rebels declared a ceasefire a year ago.
On the anniversary of the unilateral ceasefire, the
PKK's jailed Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan called for a
fresh push to revive the peace talks.
The release of Kurdish prisoners is among Kurd's key
demands.
