SLÊMANÎ,
Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Heval Kwestani,
a member of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament for
the Gorran (change) movement, has nominated jailed
Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan for the 2014 Nobel
Peace Prize. Kwestani’s application has been
accepted by the Nobel Committee.
The Member of Parliament for Slêmanî [Sulaimaniyah]
said that “Öcalan’s 2013 Newroz message emphasised
peace and democracy, it was a manifesto for the
peaceful solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey.
The fact that Times magazine placed Öcalan in a list
of the 100 most
influential
people in the World - he added - was also a factor
behind my nomination of Öcalan for the prize.”
Kwestani also said that he believed Abdullah Öcalan
was one of the strongest favourites to be awarded
the Nobel prize in 2014. Kwestani said “Just as
Nelson Mandela
played a key role in the solution of the problems in
South Africa, Öcalan is playing a key role in thewww.Ekurd.net
peaceful and democratic solution of the Kurdish
question. If Öcalan is awarded with the Nobel Peace
Prize, this will go a long way in promoting peace
and democracy in the whole region.”
According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, a
nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by
certain people. Although nominees for some prizes,
including science, medicine and economics, are
solicited from professional and academic
organizations, the peace prize accepts any
nomination from a “qualified nominator,” including
not only scholars, but also members of Parliaments
and governments.
Meanwhile The Nobel Peace Prize Committee
released a statement saying that they were unable to
confirm whether a candidate is admitted for the
prize.
"Somebody called us from Istanbul and asked why
Abdullah Öcalan was nominated. We told that person
that we are not in a position to inform whether or
not any person or entity has been nominated for the
prize. Everybody is free to nominate a candidate for
the prize, but we can never inform them whether
their suggestion has been admitted to the nomination
list," a Nobel Peace Prize Committee member told
Dogan News Agency.
The foundation stressed that
it does not provide any information on the nominees
and the people or institutions filing the formal
applications. “The information on the list of the
nominees can only be disclosed after 50 years. Only
the names of the awardees are announced to the
public,” an official from the Nobel committee
dealing with the nominations told Doğan News Agency
on April 14.
A record of 278 candidates, including 47
organizations, received nominations for the 2014
prize, Norwegian Nobel Institute’s director Geir
Lundestad announced on March 4. The committee will
cut its list to about a dozen by the end of April.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pope Francis,
former U.S. National Security Agency contractor
Edward Snowden and Pakistani teenager Malala
Yousafzai are among this year’s nominees highlighted
by the international media.
