KALAR, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Kalar Court
announced on Wednesday the release Mahmoud Sangawi,
a military
commander of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK , the main
convicted in the assassination of anti-corruption
Kurdish journalist, Kawa Germyani for lack of
evidence.
“Kalar Criminal Court issued a decision this morning
to release the accused, Mahmoud Sangawi and Zakho
Ahmed for lack of evidence,” The lawyer, Kawa Latif
of behave of the killed journalist, Kawa Garmyani,
told media.
Latif added that the court's decision is unjust and
illegal and stressed that they will appeal the
decision.
He explained that the period of investigation were
not sufficient to prove the charges.
Kawa Germyani is known as an anti-corruption Kurdish
journalist who was investigating corruption of
officials in Kalarwww.Ekurd.net
when he was
assassinated in his
parent's house on December 5, 2013 in Kalar
town, in
Sulêmanî province.
Zhyar Mhamad, volunteer lawyer in the case of Kawa
Garmyani, told the independent Kurdish NRT TV that
the release of Sangawi is the PUKs responsibility
and appealing the courts decision will have no use
because it is like appealing it in the PUK
politiebureau rather than the court.
“We previously said and expected that Sangawi
will be released and the court will be forced to
release him”. She added. “His release coincides with
the very fact that we have presented to the court
new evidence that there are telephone calls and
exchanged messages between Sangawi's cell phone and
Kawa's and it has not been known whether it was
Sangawi who called Kawa or it was someone else”.

The major suspect in Kawa's case is Mahmud Sangawi,
a military commander of the PUK, because in a
phone call in
July 2012, he threatened Kawa and the audio went
viral on social networks and YouTube. Kawa filed a
complaint in Kalar Primary Court,www.Ekurd.net
but it was of no use. He even asked the American
Consulate representative in Sulêmanî for protection.
Sangawi was
arrested after
Kawa's family filed a complaint after Kawa's death.
Kawa
Germyani was the editor-in-chief at the magazine
Rayal, and correspondent for the prominent independent Awene
Newspaper in Kalar. He was known for his active role
in tracking down cases of corruption, and had only recently published a report on
corruption at the hands of local officials.
Hundreds of people protested in the past almost two months in Erbil and Sulemani
city against the assassination of Kawa Germyani
and other journalists killed in Kurdistan region.
The demonstrators call on the Kurdish government to
bring the perpetrators and murderers to justice.
