DUHOK, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Iraqi
Kurdish authorities are constructing a bridge over
the Tigris River to link their Kurdistan region
(southern Kurdistan) with Syrian Kurdistan (Western
Kurdistan), a statement said.
The statement by the Kurdish northern Province of
Duhok said the bridge was to facilitate movement of
people and commodities between Iraqi Kurdistan
region and Syria.
The bridge will replace the Peshabur border gate,
which has so far regulated the flow of goods and
people between the two Kurdish sides, mainly through
small boats.
Tens of thousands of Syrians, mainly Kurds, have
fled to northern Iraq and are being looked after by
the Kurdish regional government in Iraq.
The bridge is the first physical link between the
Kurdish region and Syria as previously movement of
people and commodities was confined to small boats.
Since 1991, the Kurds of Iraq achieved self-rule in
part of the country.
Kurdistan region has all the trappings of an
independent state -- its own constitution,www.ekurd.net
its own
parliament, its own flag, its own army, its own
border patrol, its own national anthem, its own
education system, its own International airports,
even its own stamp inked into the passports of
visitors, a large number of foreign consulates and
embassies are located in Kurdistan's capital, Erbil.
So far 24 countries have opened consulates in the
semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
The bridge will cost $2 million and construction is
almost half-way through, the statement said.
Syrian government authorities have withdrawn from
Kurdish areas and movement between the sides is free
in the absence of customs officers.
The bridge will have the capacity of carrying trucks
loaded with up to 30 tons of goods, the statement
said.
The Peshkhabour crossing was opened in 2003 and has
been the only crossing point between the
semi-independent Kurdish region and Syria.
