Erdogan strongly rejects the claims that the jailed Kurdish leader Öcalan could be freed or moved to house detention

ANKARA,— Speaking on CNN Türk on Friday night Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said PKK militants withdrawing from Turkey will have to lay down their arms before crossing the border. This, he addeed, to prevent further confrontation.

Erdoğan added that "perhaps these militants will go to Iraq, perhaps to Syria, or perhaps to Europe, particularly the Scandinavian countries. I cannot know that. What’s important to me is peace in my country. The thing I know is that when they go, the atmosphere of my country will change when we realize the economic boom in the east of the country”.

The prime minister insisted that the BDP "is perceived as the political affiliation of the terrorist organization. To overcome this - he added - arms have to be laid down and the struggle has to be made in politics”.

He went on strongly denying claims that the jailed Kurdish leader Öcalan could be freed or moved to house detention.

Meanwhile the Turkish General Staff announced flying US-made drones over Iraqi Kurdistan to observe PKK party members.

In a statement, reported by Anatolia News Agency, it added that an agreement was signed on 4 November, 2011, with the United States, during its withdrawal from Iraq, to use the drones to meet Turkish intelligence needs.

It was disclosed that there are four US drones in Turkey that may make similar flights in future.

The Turkish forces fired artillery shells into Iraqi Kurdistan region last Thursday, apparently in a bid to intimidate Kurdistan Workers' Party PKK rebels with whom Ankara is in peace talks, AFP reported.

The shelling came days after jailed Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan made a ceasefire call in a move that raised hopes of an end to a three-decade conflict that has cost thousands of lives.
