QAMISHLI, Syrian Kurdistan,— Fierce
clashes erupted in Syria overnight between Kurdish
fighters and Arab-Islamic jihadists near the Iraqi
border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said
Thursday.
"The clashes began around midnight (2100 GMT
Wednesday) and lasted around 12 hours, with the
Kurds advancing in the direction of Al-Yaarubia, an
area controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and
Sham (ISIS) and other jihadist groups," the
Britain-based monitor said.
"The Kurds have managed to take two villages
controlled by the jihadists but it will be difficult
to capture Al-Yaarubia from ISIS," Observatory
director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
The Al-Yaarubia border crossing with Iraq is seen as
a key supply route for arms and fighters. ISIS has
carried out attacks on both sides of the border.
Also clashes broke out between the Kurdish People's
Defense Units (YPG) and ISIS near the Kurdish city
of Efrin of in Syrian Kurdistan on Thursday, Firat
news reported.
According to Firat, ISIS-Jihadists groups linked to
Al-Qaeda, deployed at three separate points near the
Meerin village between Efrin
and al-Qaeda controlled Azzaz city,www.Ekurd.net
and in the regions of Azzaz-Meerin and Yazibxane,
attempted to attack the YPG control points in the
Qestel Cindo village.
Clashes reportedly broke out at three points after
Kurdish YPG fighters responded to the attacks,
killing many members of the gang groups, including
an emir (leader) Ebu Usame El Urduni, and destroying
a vehicle carrying anti-aircraft weapons.
The tank forces of the YPG launched an attack
targeting a petrol station the al-Qaeda linked
groups use as their base. Clashes in the area are
reported to be continuing.
According to ANF a large number of al-Qaeda
militants and Emirs have been killed in clashes with
YPG fighters since mid July.
The Kurds and the Islamic-jihadists have been
fighting for control of western Kurdistan [northeastern
Syria], an area rich in oil and wheat, for months.
Rebels ostensibly fighting to overthrow President
Bashar al-Assad have increasingly turned their guns
on each other in recent months, with jihadists
clashing with the mainstream Free Syrian Army in the
north, where the rebels control vast swathes of
territory.
Syrian Kurdish fighters have meanwhile struggled to
carve out an autonomous Kurdish region in northern
Syria similar to one in
Iraq's Kurdistan region [Southern Kurdistan].
