HALABJA, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— On Monday Kurdish security forces (Asayish) arrested Osman Said Ahmed, one of the leaders of Kurdistan Islamic Movement (KIM) and a mullah in the Kurdish town of Halabja in Sulaimaniyah province.

Mullah Ahmed was arrested under accusation of encouraging Kurdish youths to go to Syria to wage Jihad.

“Mullah Ahmed is a member of the ministry of endowment and religious affairs as well as an orator Nura Mosque in Halabja,” KIM spokesman, Shwan Qaladizie, told Basnews.

“We believe that he has been arrested for something that he is not involved in, and we are expecting him to be freed soon,” added Qaladizie.

Qaladizie also argued against the idea that Mullah Ahmed may have voiced opinions damaging to the image of the Kurdistan Region.

Mullah Ahmed has called those who have been killed in Syria “martyrs”.

There has been an Asayish crackdown on young men who travel to Syria and then choose to return to Kurdistan.

The day of the arrest,www.Ekurd.net a number of religious men gathered in front of Sharazur region Asayish office in support of Mullah Ahmed, calling for his release.

Many young Iraqi Kurdish men from Halabja have travelled to Syria to take part in the on-going war in the name of Jihad. More than ten have reportedly been killed while fighting in Syria.
