QAHIRA, Iraq's Ninewa province,— Kurdistan
region president Massoud Barzani inspected on Monday
the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Qahira village,
Ninewa province, according to presidential
statement.
The statement, copy received by Aswat al-Iraq, said
that Barzani inspected the Peshmerga forces as well
as other unit, of high training capabilities, that
belong to the Kurdish Democratic Party, headed by
Barzani himself.
Qahira village, Zumar area, west of Mosul, is only
850 meters away from the Iraqi-Syrian borders.
The village, 60 km away from Duhuk province, is
inhabited by 85 families, depending on agriculture
and cattle breeding.
It is one of the disputed areas, covered by Article
140 of the Iraqi constitution.
Barzani evaluated the role of Peshmerga forces for
defending the Kurdish region and it is achievements,
as stated.
Zumar area witnessed a political crisis between
Baghdad and Erbil when the central government sent
some military units, but Peshmerga forces prevented
them from nearing the Syrian borders,www.ekurd.net
which led to the immigration of the people out fear
of future clashes between the two sides.
The citizens returned home after solving the crisis
between the two sides in August last.
Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province in Iraq, near
the border with Kurdistan region, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. The Yazidis are primarily ethnic Kurds located
near Mosul. Some 350,000 Kurdish Yazidis live in villages
around Mosul near Kurdistan autonomous region
border.
Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution states that
there will be a referendum in the areas bordering
the Kurdistan autonomous region, including the
northern oil city of Kirkuk, so that people can
choose whether to be ruled by the central government
or the Kurds.
