SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', —
The statue of a donkey will be unveiled in Azadi
(Freedom) Park in central Sulaimaniyah (Suli) today,
Saturday evening.
This will be the second statue of a donkey in
Kurdistan. The portrait of a donkey which was laid
in Sulaimaniyah earlier this year was attacked and
damaged.
The statue of the Drop-Eared Donkey will be unveiled
in a praiseworthy ceremony today, said Omar Klol,
secretary for Kurdistan Donkey's Party.
Klol said guests from Sulaimaniyah and Garmiyan and
the rest of the Kurdistan Region have been invited
to the ceremony in honor of the Drop-Eared Donkey
which accompanied and assisted the Kurdish fighters
(peshmargas) during the hard times of struggle
against Saddam Hussein regime.
He added the peshmargas used this beast of burden
for carrying water and armory to their colleagues in
the mountains.
Klol continued the statue should have been created
and erected in Garmiyan, where the Drop-Eared Donkey
was best known,www.ekurd.net
but Garmiyan refused the idea.
The donkey disappeared after the Anfal process of
Kurdistan.
The Donkeys' Party has
unveiled the first statue of its
four-legged namesake in dress attire in central
Sulaimaniyah on April 12, 2012.
It is located on Nali Street, which is named for a
famous Kurdish poet who wrote a well-known poem
about donkeys.
An
attack on the
statue of a donkey in Sulaimaniyah, has set off
outcry among artists and journalists who deemed it
as an assault on freedom and the "terrorization of
thought".
In April, the party has demanded that Kurdistan regional
government KRG provide it with financial support to open
a radio station, which is to be named "Zarin," the
Kurdish word for the sound a donkey makes.
