ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The
Kurdistan Region has passed its 2012 budget bill
amid protests by opposition forces. The budget
amounts to $13bn with a deficit of $2bn.
The bill was passed during a parliamentary boycott
by opposition MPs. The MPs say there is a lack of
transparency in the budget.
MPs from Kurdistan’s two ruling parties - the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan
Democratic Party - have criticized opposition MPs
for trying to make the budget fail. The budget was
passed after fourteen days of negotiations. The
budget was supposed to have been completed in
January but was delayed significantly and has
affected the payment of grants for citizens.
The lion’s share of the budget - some 27 percent -
is going towards security. Other notable amounts
include 20 percent for the ministries of education
and higher education. Less than one percent is going
to the region’s Environment Board and less than 0.5
percent is going towards human rights projects. A
ten percent salary cut is included in the budget for
the region’s main leaders,www.ekurd.net
including the prime
minister, president and ministers.
Kurdistan’s budget is yet another issue that is
causing disputes in already tense relationships
between political parties. These latest accusations
of a lack of transparency in the budget’s finances
are expected to do little to ease public concern.
