KRG denies Kurdistan
Region's airports transfer weapons for Syrian Kurds
June 21, 2012
ERBIL-Hewlęr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', —
The airports in the Kurdistan Region Government
(KRG) territory have not been exploited for
transferring arms to the opposition in Syria, an
official statement by KRG said.
The statement was issued to refute such accusation
made by Walid al-Helli, an MP from Prime Minister
Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law Coalition (SLC).
"We strongly condemn such baseless allegation by the
SLC MP and announce the airports in the [Kurdistan]
region are not used for this purpose," KRG statement
said.
It stressed that all the airports in the Kurdistan
Region comply with the rule and regulations issued
by the Iraqi Civil Aviation Board (ICAB).
"The SLC and the federal government know it well
that all the airports in Iraq, including those in
Kurdistan, are under the scrutiny of ICAB," the
statement said.
The statement continued the board has precise
information about the trips made to and from Erbil
and Sulaimaniyah airports as well as the cargo
transferred into and out of these airports.
It described the allegation of smuggling arms to
Syria as "trivial, because it is intended only for
political end… to defame the successful experience
of Kurdistan, to destabilize the region's security
and to suspend the continual developments in the
Kurdish community."
The statement added that these rumors only serve to
lower the success of the KRG and deteriorate the
region's stability.
