ERBIL-Hewlęr,
Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) in Iraq's north does not maintain
any secret prisons, a spokesperson said Tuesday.
The refutation comes after the United Nations said
in a new report that UN teams have visited prisons
in Kurdistan where they have seen people imprisoned
without trials or even without official charges. And
the report suggested there were secret prisons in
the region.
“The KRG has made vital steps when it comes to
prisons. It has built big prisons that are open to
the international organizations [for inspection],
though some of the prisons are still crowded for
which there are ongoing efforts for solutions.” said
Dindar Zebari, a spokesperson for the KRG’s Foreign
Relations Office.
“Ther are no secret prisons and no one has been
imprisoned on political grounds… prisoners are
treated well. We have called on the UN,www.ekurd.net
EU, and international organizations that if they
have information that points to secret prisons in
Kurdistan region, they can directly visit the
locations to verify the info”
