April 19, 2012
DUBAI, — Syrian Kurds have been upset at
controversial
statements
issued by head of the Syrian National Council Burhan
Ghalioun in which he denied the existence of a
Syrian Kurdistan.
Official spokesman of the Syrian National Council
Ahmed Ramadan supported the right of Kurds to assume
a common identity and argued that Syrian Kurds are
no exception.
“Syrian Kurds are inseparable from their brethren
outside Syria whether in Iraq, Turkey, or Iran,”
Ramadan told the Kurdish-speaking Erbil-based
newspaper Rudaw on Wednesday.
Ramadan added that unlike the current regime, the
Syrian opposition recognizes the existence of a
Syrian Kurdistan even though it is still within the
borders of Syria.
“The Syrian regime could not deny the existence of
Kurdistan as a geographical location,www.ekurd.net
but it has always erased the cultural, historical,
and demographic features of the place.”
Ramadan also said "The issues of federalism and
autonomy should not be talked about right now in any
way, the Kurdish parties in Syria have some views
that do not match the reality of Syria."
For Ramadan, the Syrian regime has always wanted to
get rid of all Kurds, but the Syrian opposition
takes pride in the identity of its Kurdish people.
“The Syrian National Council is proud of Syrian
Kurds and their flag.”
The new constitution of Syria, Ramadan explained,
will include articles that will specifically refer
to the protection of Kurdish culture and identity.
Ramadan’s support of Syrian Kurds came in response
to the controversial statements issued earlier by
head of the Syrian National Council Burhan Ghalioun
in which he denied the existence of a Syrian
Kurdistan.
“There is nothing called Syrian Kurdistan,” he said.
“Syrian Kurds will be given their rights through the
constitution like the rest of Syrian citizens.”
Ghalioun also rejected the idea of granting federal
status to Kurds in Syria and called this project an
“illusion.”
“Applying the Iraqi model is impossible in Syria.”
