Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — President of Iraq's
Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani called here Sunday
for resolving the case of Vice President Tareq Al-Hashemi
through dialogue among all parties concerned.
Addressing a rally of students and youth in Erbil,
Barzani called on all Iraqi leaders to sit together
to find a way out of Al-Hashemi's case.
He cautioned that unless the problem was overcome,
there would be grave consequences on the country.
But, he said: "It's up to court to decide upon the
case. And a court decision must be put in force."
Iraq is set to witness soon a national conference
called by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.
Barzani hoped that the conference would come up with
a set of significant resolutions that could lead to
a way out of the current crisis in Iraq.
Earlier in the day, Iraqi court decided to put Vice
President Al-Hashemi on trial in absentia after he
refused to return to Baghdad to stand trial.
Al-Hashemi has been in Kurdistan for several months
shortly before an arrest warrant was made against
him. Iraqi courts have no actual authority on the
autonomous Kurdish region.
Hashemi would be tried in absentia according to
Article 121 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of
1971,www.ekurd.net
Iraqi media reported. He is accused of involving in
terrorist activities and the assassination of Iraqi
officials.
The arrest warrant for Hashemi was issued under
anti-terror laws.
