January 24, 2012

SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The Vice president of Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP and the incoming Kurdistan premier Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Sulaimaniyah on Tuesday Hawlati website reported.

Nechirvan meets with Nawshirwan Mustafa, the main Kurdish opposition leader from Gorran movement, reportedly to discuss possibility of Gorran’s involvement in the new cabinet.

After the meeting, Gorran says it will not take part in the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government that’s expected to be announced soon as part of a political deal between the two ruling parties in the Kurdish region in Iraq.

“We explained to Barzani that Gorran will remain as an opposition force and will watch over the government,” said Shaho Saeed, spokesman for the Gorran party.

Barzani however had told a press conference that the visit was not about cabinet formation because he had not been officially assigned by the President of Kurdistan Region to form his cabinet. “When I am officially assigned with the task, I will visit the opposition and other political forces for the purpose again”

Barzani is also expected to visit other smaller opposition groups, the Kurdistan Islamic Group and the Kurdistan Islamic Union.

Earlier Monday the Iraqi Kurdistan’s opposition announced that is not planning to join the new government,

MP Abdul Salam Berwari told Aswat al-Iraq on Monday that the party is endeavoring to join the opposition parties to the government.

Both leading Kurdish parties agreed in 2009 to exchange senior posts each two years.

As for the post of deputy premier, the candidate is not determined yet, but it will be decided within a month time, he added.

He elaborated that Barzani will try to join the opposition in his government, but the opposition announced separate statements that they will not participate in the coming government and put their conditions.

Berwari expected that the opposition will not participate in the coming government.
