Iraqi Kurds welcome
reversal of old Baathist law
Erbil: Maysoon Al-Damluji, spokeswoman of the
Sunni-majority Iraqiya bloc in the Iraqi Parliament,
said recently that her bloc is not opposed the
cabinet’s decision to revoke all decrees issued by
the Northern Affairs Committee during the Baath
party’s rule in Iraq concerning Kirkuk and the
disputed territories. The office of Rozh Nuri Shawis,
Iraqi deputy prime minister, released a draft of the
cabinet decision which will be sent to Parliament
for a vote. This new legislation aims to undo all
laws passed by the former Iraqi regime about the
province where Arabization and displacement of
Kurdish families changed the demography of the
province. In turn, some Kurdish leaders hope this
will be a positive step toward the implementation of
the constitutional Article 140 which is to solve
disputes over territories such as Kirkuk by sending
Arab families back to their original cities and
resettling Kurds in the province. The draft
resolution demands that the government’s assembly
write new decrees which must be in line with
implementing article 140. However, Damluji said,
“The statement of our MPs does not reflect the
bloc’s view. We are only concerned about the timing
of the decision. We believe this is just to create
disagreements between Iraqiya and Kurdistani
coalition, especially now that the two sides are
very close.”... rudaw.net
