One million Iraqi Kurds sign petition against Turkish, Iranian attacks  31.8.2011

ERBIL-Hewlęr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', —  The Kurdistan Students Union (KSU) has handed a petition signed by over a million people to the United Nations office in Erbil calling for an end to the Turkish-Iranian military offensives within Iraqi Kurdistan.

Irfan Aziz, secretary of the KSU told a press conference on Monday: "In three days... we have collected 1,011,118 signatures from across the Kurdistan Region, including Kirkuk city.

"People from across the social and political spectrum have signed the petition. It has been submitted to the UN office, both Iranian and Turkish consulates in Erbil,

and the Iraqi parliament so that the bombardments are ended as soon as possible."

Turkey and Iran have been attacking the border territories for year, ostensibly aimed at destroying the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its affiliate the Party for Free life in Kurdistan (PJAK). The attacks, however, have killed 12 civilians so far.

From August 17, Turkish jets carried out air strikes against a Kurdish PKK separatist group's bases in Iraqi Kurdistan region, under justification of chasing elements of the anti-Ankara PKK, forcing large numbers of Kurdish citizens of those areas to desert their home villages,www.ekurd.netincluding an air raid that killed 7 Kurdish civilians in a village north of Kurdistan’s Sulaimaniyah city on August 21st.
