Turkish Airlines Lands in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan  15.4.2011

ERBIL-Hewlęr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The first plane from Turkish Airlines national carrier landed in Erbil International Airport on Thursday carrying on board Turkish Finance Minister, deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and the chair of the administrative board of Turkish Airlines.

The team were received by several ministers from the Kurdistan Regional Government, governor of Erbil, Head of Department of Foreign Relations in the KRG and Turkish Consul General in Erbil.

Governor of Erbil, Nawzad Hadi said in a welcoming speech that the Kurdistan Region is witnessing progress in different aspects everyday and he valued the role of Turkey in rebuilding the Kurdistan region. The chair of the administrative board of Turkish Airlines who was part of the Turkish team said that

peace and security in the Kurdistan Region have opened doors of business to the outside world.

He said that Turkish Airlines appreciates this fact about the region that’s why it has launched flights to the region. By flying into Kurdistan, the Turkish national carrier registers its 135th destination,

Kurdish Trade and Industry Minister Sinan Chalabi also delivered a speech and after thanking those who made this initiative of Turkish Airlines happen, he said that the Kurdish administration will do its best to facilitate the work of Turkish investors.

It was first Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during an official visit to the region last month who announced that his country’s biggest airline will launch regular flights from Istanbul to the Kurdish capital city, Erbil.

Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek delivered a speech at the opening ceremony at the Turkish-built Erbil International Airport and he described PM Erdogan’s initiative as historic.

“Kurds and Turks have lived together for one thousand years as brothers and no one can disrupt that brotherhood.” said Şimşek.
