CHAMCHAMAL,
Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The family of a
12-year-old boy who was killed in protests that
swept across Sulaimaniyah province in February have
voiced concern after a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)
politician said.
The Kurdish boy, Garmyan Ahmed, was killed during
protests against corruption of Kurdistan government,
nepotism and unemployment in Chamchamal district -
45 km east of Kirkuk in February - according to
reports by fire of KDP guards in front of their
headquarters where protesters clashed with the them
and the security forces.
Fazil Mirani, KDP politburo chairman, however
claimed in a televised program aired on Payam TV – a
channel affiliate with the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU)
– that he had been told by a KIU politician who was
aware of the February protests that Garmyan was not
shot by the KDP guards and was not shot in front of
the KDP headquarter. The KDP is led by Kurdistan
president Massoud Barzani.
Mirani said he was shot in front of the district
hall – far away from the KDP headquarter – and was
transferred by ambulance from there to the protest
scene in front of the KDP headquarter to claim he
was shot there.
On Thursday, Ahmed Sabir, Garmyan’s father,
Chamchamal mayor Tariq Rashid, and Ahmed Mawlawi, a
member of the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU),www.ekurd.net
held a press conference regarding Mirani’s comments.
Sabir rejected Mirani's remarks describing it as
another wound in the bodies of the family members
who already had a wound with the death of their son.
“We strongly protest against Fazil Mirani” said the
father of the boy, “this remark has really grieved
us. It is like Garmyan has been killed again”
Tariq Rasheed, the mayor of Chamchamal rejected the
KDO official’s claims saying “we have evidence where
Garmyan was killed is just in front of the Communist
Party’s headquarters, and that’s just opposite of
the KDP headquarter not the district hall”
“There are video footage which show that Garmyan was
transferred by a BMW car not and ambulance. And
there is police crime scene investigation files
which can be reviewed for this purpose” Rasheed
said.
The KIU official, Ahmed Mawlawi, sounded
astonishment about the KDP official’s comment saying
“IT is strange that this comment comes 10 months
after the incident. If that’s true, let him disclose
the name of the KIG official who he claims has given
him the info” referring to Mirani’s claim that a KIG
official has told him Garmyan was shot away from the
KDP headquarters and then moved to the protest
scene.
Since last February till middle April, thousands of protesters
gathered daily
in Sulaimaniyah and other parts of Kurdistan against
corruption and the lording over Kurdistan region by
two main parties KDP and PUK. Kurdish
protestors demand the ouster of the local Kurdistan
government KRG, calling for improving services and
living conditions and fighting corruption.
After 62 days of protests, the Governorate of of
Sulaimaniyah has banned unlicensed demonstrations in
the city. Heavy Kurdish forces
deployed
in Sulaimaniyah city to prevent any
demonstrations, and occupied the city center and other parts of
Sulaimaniyah. The Security Committee in Sulaimaniyah
banned on April 18 all sorts of protests.
Most of the demonstrators opposed Massoud Barzani, and the ruling
Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP. Ten people
were
killed and more than 700 others wounded and 220
more have been arrested in clashes between
demonstrators and Kurdish security forces during a
wave or protests that swept Sulaimaniyah. The
Kurdish security forces (Asayish) arrested and
tortured a lot of activists and
journalists.
The protesters demand the Kurdish government and
parliament resign to give way for “early transparent
elections”. They complain about “monopolizing the
economic and political authority,” by the two major
parties of Kurdistan. Many observe allegiance to
either of the two ruling patties a must to get
employed and hence were deprived of the right. Kurdistan suffers from
electric power deficiency but after almost 20 years
of semi autonomy.
For decades, the KDP
of regional president Massoud Barzani and the
PUK of Iraq's President
Jalal Talabani have lorded over the region.
Massoud Barzani and his relatives control a
large number of commercial enterprises in
Kurdistan-Iraq, with a gross value of several
billion US dollars. The family is routinely accused
of corruption and nepotism by Kurdish media as well
as international observers.
Iraq's Kurdish regional government has near
total autonomy and is funded by a share of the
country's oil revenue. The two parties that share
power each command former guerrilla militias that
have been given the status of regional security
forces.
Korek, owned by a nephew of Kurdistan president
Massoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic
Party (KDP), was established in 2001 in the region
and has 3 million customers, while Kuwait's Zain
started operations in the zone.
All three firms secured $1.25 billion licenses each
to operate in Iraq in 2007.
