We are a group of Human Rights activists,
advocates of civil liberties and champions of
Freedom of Expression in Iraqi Kurdistan.
We are writing to draw your immediate attention to
gross Human Rights violations currently developing
in Iraqi Kurdistan. In the wake of a series of riots
that broke out earlier in the city of Zakho, in
Kurdistan, North of Iraq, the intelligence and
security apparatus belonging to Kurdish Democratic
Party of Iraq, or KDP, have launched indiscriminate
beatings, crackdowns and critically injured a number
of nonviolent |

protesters. An uncertain number of demonstrators
have been incarcerated ad infinitum and devoid of
any access to legal aid in detention centers in
Zakho and Duhok and its surroundings. Names and
exact number o f detainees, currently being
interned, has not been revealed.
We are very concerned about the whereabouts and
health state of detainees. Ill-treatment,
disappearance, forceful confessions and use of
torture are all widespread practices and source of
great concern.
We urge you to seriously pursue these developments,
ensure the protection of detainees, and pressure
Kurdistan Regional Government KRG to release the
names of those in custody as soon as possible.
Thanking you for your cooperation.
Yours Sincerely,
Human Rights Activists
