Massoud Barzani Supports Democratic
Aspirations and Kurdish Rights in Syria

Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The President of Iraq's
Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani met with the
leadership of the Syrian Kurdish National Council to
discuss the political situation and the role of the
Kurdish opposition in the uprising in Syria.
The Syrian Kurdish National Council, which leads the
Kurdish opposition and demonstrations in the Kurdish
areas was formed in a recent conference in the
north-eastern Syrian Kurdish city of Qamishli and
includes 11 political parties and 11 independents,

Council briefed Massoud
Barzani on the latest developments in Syria as well
as the outcome of their talks with other Syrian
opposition groups.
Barzani described Monday’s meeting as historical and
commended the unity of the Kurdish opposition in
Syria and the peaceful ways they have pursued in
calling for their rights. “This meeting is very
important for both the Kurds in Syria and Kurdistan
in general as it is intended to talk about the
future of the Syrian Kurds,” Barzani said, voicing
the Kurdistan Region’s full support for the
democratic aspirations of the Syrian people and
Kurdish rights.
“You must play your role very carefully and ensure
that democratic values and Kurdish rights are
recognized and guaranteed in the Syrian
Constitution. I call on you to work closely with
those both inside and outside the country who are
prepared to meet your demands,” Barzani said,www.ekurd.net
urging the Syrian Kurdish leaders to ensure that
they are not dragged into any possible sectarian
strife in that country.
He also urged them to promote and support peaceful
co-existence and tolerance among Syria’s various
religious and ethnic communities, including
safeguarding the rights of the Christian community.
