BAGHDAD/SULAIMANIYAH,
— A member of the Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC)
Fuad Ma’sum, said Sunday evening the supporters of
Gorran (Change) Movement canceled their protests in
Sulaimaniyah province in Iraq's Kurdistan region.
The supporters, led by Gorran leadership, among the
other demands, requested Saturday evening
dissolution of the Kurdistan Regional parliament and
“a fair and transparent” general elections. The call
seemed to be motivated by the current public
uprisings in the Arab world.
The reformist from Gorran," said Sunday that the ruling parties in the
three provinces comprising the semiautonomous
northern Kurdistan region are corrupt and don't
represent the people.
Ma’sum told AK news the security authorities in the
province stated the supporters withdrew a request
made earlier to sanction their protest in
Sulaimaniyah.
Gorran represents the major opposition faction in
the Kurdish parliament.

Two Islamic parties are
also allied with Gorran. However, it was only Gorran
who called for the protest and disbanding
parliament.
The politburos of the major parties in the Region
were quick to respond to the call,www.ekurd.netdescribing
it as a “seditious act.” The call was received by
protest demonstration by the vocational syndicates
as well as a number of old fighters affiliated with
two major parties in the Kurdistan Region. Some
parties and top political institutions expressed
their support for the majority against Gorran’s
call.
The spokesman for Groan, Mohammed Tawfiq Raheem
believed that these responses to their call are
“natural.”
Gorran emerged in regional elections in 2009 as a
rival to the two main ruling Kurdish parties and won
25 seats in the parliament. Gorran is challenging
Talabani's PUK,www.ekurd.netand
the KDP of regional
president Massoud Barzani and accuses the parties of
corruption.
The Gorran is headed by the former senior PUK-leader
Nawshirwan Mustafa, who was Talabani’s deputy until
2007. Since the July 2009 elections in which it
secured almost a third of the seats of 111-member
Parliament of Kurdistan.
