Iraqi Kurdistan Govt Denounce Gorran’s
Call for Abolition of KRG and Parliament 31.1.2011

Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The president of
Iraq's Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani chaired a
meeting today in Salahadin of the KRG Council of
Ministers, Kurdistan Parliament and leaders and
representatives of all political parties in the
Kurdistan Region, to discuss the
extraordinary call by the Region’s
opposition group (Gorran) for the abolition of the
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Parliament.
The meeting concluded by a statement denouncing this
call by Gorran and calling upon the people of
Kurdistan to be wary of any attempts to jeopardize
the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.
“Any attempts for reform or change in the Kurdistan
Region must be undertaken within the framework of
law and regulations and must also respect the
results of elections and the will of the people of
the Region. We reject any attempts that would
jeopardize the security, stability and peaceful
coexistence in the Kurdistan Region,” said the
statement.

The statement went on to
say “we reiterate our belief in the importance of
democratic values, including having differences of
opinion and having a peaceful and legal opposition
in the Region. We acknowledge the need for reforms
and that there are shortcomings such as corruption
in the Region, but we are determined that the
government, the opposition, and civil society
organizations should work together towards making
progress in addressing these issues.”
As well as the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and
the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), all the
other main parties of the Region participated in
today's meeting which included the Islamic Union of
Kurdistan, the Islamic Group of Kurdistan, the
Islamic Movement of Kurdistan,www.ekurd.netas
well as parties representing leftists, nationalists,
Turkomens and Christians.
Gorran emerged in regional elections in 2009 as a
rival to the two main ruling Kurdish parties and won
25 seats in the parliament. Gorran is challenging
Talabani's PUK, and
the KDP of regional
president Massoud Barzani and accuses the parties of
corruption.
The Gorran is headed by the former senior PUK-leader
Nawshirwan Mustafa, who was Talabani’s deputy until
2007. Since the July 2009 elections in which it
secured almost a third of the seats of 111-member
Parliament of Kurdistan.
