BONN, Germany,—
Wafa was only 17 years old
when she was murdered by her family about 17 years
ago for “honor”, said her sister Nourig Apfeld, a
Syrian Kurd living in Germany, who witnessed the
murder of her sister. She has written a book in
German about it.
The book, titled “I Witnessed My Sister’s Murder for
Honor”, has become relatively popular in Germany. It
talks about the brutality of the killing of her
sister and the psychological pressure she went
through throughout the past 17 years in which the
story was kept covert.
She says that her sister rebelled against the strict
rules of her Muslim parents and wanted to lead an
independent life. Her desire for freedom finally
cost her life in 1993 by her father two other close
relatives in Bad Godesberg,www.ekurd.neta
municipal district of Bonn, southern North
Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
“I was not sure how and to who I should talk about
it,” said Apfeld, who is now married to a German
man. “At the end, I went to police with my husband
and told all the story.”
“They told me: look,” said Apfeld that her father
pointed to the corpse of her sister. “If you cross
the line and do something wrong, we’ll do the same
to you.”
But finally Apfeld decided in 2007 to tell the
police everything. |
