SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — A delegation of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), is to land in Sulaimaniyah on Saturday night to hold talks with Kurdish officials about the Kurdish issue in Turkey and on preparations for Kurdish National Conference.

The delegation, led by Turkish politician Ahmad Turk would meet with the Iraqi President, Jalal Talabani on Monday, and later with the Kurdistan Region's former Premier, Nechirvan Barzani.

The delegation is composed of Kurdish political leaders from Turkey including the deputy head of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), Bangi Yeldiz.

The two sides will discuss the terms of organizing a Kurdish National Conference with the participation of all Kurdish political parties.

Also, the delegation plans to discuss ways of making the Turkey Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)'s temporary unilateral ceasefire a permanent one.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in March 2009 claimed that a Kurdish conference would urge the PKK to lay down its arms, but since there were many disagreements among the Kurds the conference was never able to convene.

First the PKK dragged its feet and tried to establish preconditions for the conference. PKK-affiliated publishing and broadcasting agencies at that time claimed that the organization wanted to be present at the conference,

The PKK has been battling against the Turkish state for decades, demanding rights for the Kurds who occupy large Kurdish areas of southeastern Turkey [Turkey Kurdistan].

The clashes between the two sides have so far claimed tens of thousands lives.

The party which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and a number of other countries, has declared two successive ceasefires this year.

The most recent was announced on Aug. 13 in line with the Holy Islamic month of Ramadan, lasting until Sept. 20.

The PKK have alleged that the Turkish military have continued their assaults on the group despite the latest laying down of arms.
