TEHRAN,— Iranian security forces have killed four members of an outlawed Kurdish group in the western province of Kurdistan, the hardline Kayhan newspaper reported on Saturday.

The four members of Komala -- a banned leftist Kurdish group -- had "entered the country for terrorist operations but were killed before they could do anything," the report said.

It added that weapons and explosives had been seized from the group.

Western Iran, which has a sizeable Kurdish population, has seen deadly clashes in recent years between Iranian security forces and Kurdish rebel groups operating from bases in neighbouring Iraq.

In May, Iran hanged four Kurds, including a woman, after convicting them of membership in another outlawed Kurdish group, the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK).                

Since 2004 the PJAK took up arms for self-rule in Kurdistan province northwestern of Iran [Iranian Kurdistan]. Half the members of PJAK are women. The PJAK has about 3,000 armed militiamen.
The PJAK, or the (Partiya Jiyana Azad a Kurdistane) is a militant Kurdish nationalist group based in the border mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan region that has been carrying out attacks Iranian forces in the Kurdistan Province of Iran [Eastern Kurdistan] and other Kurdish-inhabited areas.

Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey all have significant ethnic Kurdish minorities. Estimate to 12 million Kurds live in Iran.

PJAK is closely allied with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which operates in Turkey and is listed as a "terrorist" group by Ankara and much of the international community.
