BAGHDAD/ERBIL, — Having a Kurdish president of Iraq is linked to changes that could occur in the Iraqi political arena, Kurdish Lawmaker Dr Mahmoud Othman said on Sunday.

“The issue that the Kurdistan Alliance would keep or give away the position of Iraq’s President is subjected to discussions with other blocs,” Othman told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He explained that the decisive point in this regard are the coalitions tshat will be joined to form the new government.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Roj Nuri Shawais (Kurd) told the press last July that Kurdish political blocs want an Iraqi Kurd to hold the position of Iraq’s President.

Iraqi president Jalal Talabani may give up his post,
“We have clearly announced it that we want Jalal Talabani (Kurd) to be the President of Iraq,” Shawais said.

He noted that Iraqi Kurds deserve this position because they are the second race in Iraq after Arabs who would hold the premiership and Parliament’s speakership.

Aref Taifour, a leader in the Kurdistan Blocs’ Coalition (KBC) said last July that there is no way the Kurds will accept the post of the speaker of parliament because they are expecting the presidential post.

Last March, immediately following the Iraqi elections, Tareq al-Hashemi, the Iraqi vice-president,
www.ekurd.nettold Arab media that he favors an Arab to take over the presidency.

He said that Iraq is an Arab country and that only an Arab president could pull the nation back from the dangers of renewed sectarian strife.
