ERBIL-Hewlêr,
Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The chairman of al-Iraqiya,
former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, is expected
in Erbil later on Sunday to confer with Kurdistan
Region’s President, Massoud Barzani, to reach a
settlement for the current crisis caused by the
delay in the formation of the new Iraqi government,
a Kurdistan Presidency source said.
“Allawi is expected in Arbil today to confer with
the president of Kurdistan Region on the recent
developments in the political arena in Iraq and the
issue of forming the new government,” the source
told Aswat Al-Iraq.
Al-Iraqiya Leader’s visit is taking place three days
after the conclusion of a similar visit to Erbil by
the leader of the Supreme Islamic Council, Ammar
al-Hakim and a delegation from the National
Alliance, that held a meeting with Kurdistan
President Massoud Barzani,

in which both leaders
discussed the formation of the new government and
the political situation in the country.
The said meetings are taking place at a time when
the Iraqi political arena is witnessing deep
differences since the announcement of the results of
Iraq’s March 7th nationwide elections. This was
particularly evident between the two main blocs that
won the majority of the seats in the new 325-seat
Parliament, with Al-Iraqiya that got 91 seats and
the State of Law, led by outgoing Prime Minister,
Massoud Barzani, who got 89 seats, whilst the latter
had merged with the third largest bloc that won 70
seats - the Supreme Islamic Council, forming the
bloc that gathered the largest number of seats in
the new parliament.
Al-Iraqiya still insists on its right to form the
new government, having scored the largest number of
seats in the new parliament, whilst the National
Alliance, comprising the State of Law and the
Supreme Islamic Alliance, insists on a similar
right, after gathering the largest number of seats
in the new parliament.
The said elections gave al-Iraqiya 91 seats, being
the largest number of seats in the new parliament,
whilst the State of Law got 89 seats and the Supreme
Islamic Council that scored 70 seats and the
Kurdistan Alliance with 57 seats.
