Fire burns hundreds of donums of land in
Sulaimaniyah
Sulaimaniyah: Fire fighters extinguished a large
blaze in Sulaimaniyah on Monday that covered a vast
mountainous area burning hundreds of donums of woods
and bushes, said the head of Sulaimaniyah's fire
department. In a statement to AKnews, Yadgar
Mohammad said that the fire in Azmar Mountain
started at 14:00 local time and lasted four hours.
The wind was blowing and the mountain was difficult
and planted with mines, he said, making control of
the fire very difficult for the fire crew. "But
hundred donums of land covered with bushes and trees
were burned in the fire," Mohammed added. Last week,
another fire in Bazyan township of Sulaimaniyah
province spread into several villages in the area,
leaving a large area of plantation devastated. In
the lat few months, numerous fire incidents have
been reported in Sulaimaniyah. The official figures
by the Fire Department in Sulaimaniya indicate that
only in last June 1,047 fires broke out, the most
violent one was in Sulaimaniyah's Soma Hotel which
claimed 29 lives, including 14 foreigners. aknews

Barzani’s Party to Hold
Convention in November
Erbil: A member of the political bureau of the
Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) announced last week
that his party is going to hold its 13th convention
in November with the unlikelihood for the incumbent
chairman Massoud Barzani to change. The announcement
comes only few months after Barzani appointed his
nephew; Nechirvan Barzani-who had previously served
as prime minister of Kurdistan- as his deputy leader
of the party. While Barzani, the uncle, serves as
the president of the region, many have predicted
that the younger Barzani will be elected the
chairman of the party. But Mahmoud Muhammed, KDP’s
politburo member, has abolished this prediction
saying that Massoud Barzani will remain as both
leader of the party and president of the region.
“Massoud Barzani will have no rival,” said Muhammad
adding that all preparations for the convention to
be held in about three months’ time have finalized.
“He is the best person to lead the KDP,” added
Muhammad. Muhammad said that a large number of women
and youth will be elected leaders of the KDP in the
forthcoming convention. rudaw net
