All over the world, journalists continue to confront
harassment, physical torture and death penalty
without any accountability. It can stem from honest
criticism of corrupt government officials to
covering stories in line of duty, especially in
troubling war-stricken regions.
On a daily basis, we hear Kurdish journalists and
political dissidents being hanged and slain in the
worst merciless methods without the slightest
reprimand. It does not flabbergast us as much
because it goes on and on and more importantly the
perpetrator regimes are proven to all of us.
Hypocrisy and duplicity of the global community is
not something unheard of, either.
However, what is infeasible for us to visualize is
that some of these unthinkable mishaps are now
increasingly taking place in our own progressive
Kurdish society? The number of Kurdish journalists
knowingly or unknowingly being killed in Kurdistan
is on the increase,www.ekurd.netraising
every ones sense of inquisitiveness. The worst of
all, it echoes in global media in an unbelievable
velocity and shoddily undermines the credibility and
legitimacy of Kurdish Regional Government. It
scathes the humanizing image and growing repute of
Kurdish people.
What is scandalous of all the most is some
unsubstantiated claims lately surfacing in varied
Kurdish media that even our own government officials
could possibility have been accomplice in carrying
out such intolerable crimes against its own
citizens? Albeit suspected and strongly believed it
is a rumor fabricated and distorted merely for
political motives, it is strongly recommended that
an immediate investigation be launched by an
independent commission to unfold the facts in this
respect.
In order to placate public’s growing rage and
clarify any misconception if any, the culprits
should be sought, brought to justice and their
motives queried. KRG’s reservation toward this huge
felony may culminate in general public misplacing
their faith in our justice system. It will herald
the ineptitude and ineffectiveness of our government
security forces to maintain law in the country and
ensure citizens protections. It will hearten
criminals to continue committing similar crimes in
future.
Our government is liable to ensure the safety and
welfare of all Kurdish citizens and to respect
freedom of expression. Kurdish citizens elect
government officials and their representatives to
stand up for them, to speak up for them and to
guarantee their constitutional rights.
