MARIWAN, Iranian Kurdistan, — The Kurdish press agency ANF claims that fighters of the PJAK, the Party for a Free Life of Kurdistan, have killed 16 Iranian Revolutionary guards in two operations. The attacks are a response to the execution of five Kurds by the Iranian state.

The PJAK attacked a military base near the city of Mariwan [Eastern Kurdistan]. In this attack 12 soldiers were killed. One hour later a military convoy of the Iranian revolutionary guard was attacked by the PJAK. This happened near the village of Zino in the province of Piranshahr. In this attack four soldiers were killed and four were wounded.

The Kurdish organization has claimed responsibility for the attacks in a declaration. The PJAK says this is a response to the execution of five alleged PJAK-members last Sunday. The PJAK declared this week a ‘Week of Resistance and Freedom’. The news cannot be confirmed by independent news sources.

Since 2004 the PJAK took up arms for self-rule in Kurdistan province northwestern of Iran (Iranian Kurdistan, Eastern Kurdistan). Half the members of PJAK are women. The PJAK has about 3,000 armed militiamen.

Yesterday there were a general strike in the Kurdish regions of Iran [Eastern Kurdistan] against the execution of the five prisoners.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), four of the five executed were ethnic Kurds. While one was a member of a pro-monarchist group. HRW says that these executions follow convictions that appear to have relied on the use of torture. Iranian authorities maintain that all five were engaged in “terrorist operations, including involvement in the bombing of government and public centers in various Iranian cities.”

Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey all have significant ethnic Kurdish minorities. Estimate to 12 million Kurds live in Iran.
