ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — Jalal Talabani is the Kurds' nominee to occupy the position of Iraq’s President, a Kurdish official said on Monday.

The former Kurdistan PM Nechirvan Barzani said that Talabani as President of Iraq will serve the interests of Kurds and all Iraqis.

“All Kurdish political parties should support the nomination of Talabani to this post,” Barzani told the press including Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He said that Kurds’ internal differences should not be exported outside their Kurdistan region.

“All Kurdish political blocs should be unified to succeed in Baghdad,” Barzani said.

An Iraqi lawmaker from the Kurdistan Alliance said on Saturday that her bloc’s naming of incumbent Iraqi President Jalal Talabani for the presidency is commensurate with the constitution that stresses the principle of equal opportunities.

Earlier, a member of the al-Iraqiya bloc’s Tajdeed (Renewal) List said the bloc is “still” calling that Iraqi vice president Tareq al-Hashemi be the president of Iraq,

“The al-Iraqiya bloc agrees that the post of president of Iraq should be occupied by an Arab person and still wants the post to be specifically reserved for Hashemi,” Abdulkareem al-Samarraie said in an interview with the semi-official al-Iraqiya news channel.

Al-Hashemi,told Arabic media that Iraq is an Arab country and that only an Arab president could pull the nation back from the dangers of renewed sectarian strife.
