ERBIL-Hewlêr,
Kurdistan region 'Iraq', Kurdistan Region
Presidency— At a time when the people of Kurdistan
and Iraq are celebrating last Sunday’s successful
legislative elections, it is unfortunate that recent
statements made by some Iraqi personalities in
Baghdad have a tendency to remind us of a time long
gone. These statements are not consistent with the
maxims of the new Iraq.
Iraq’s Constitution guarantees equality for all
Iraqi citizens regardless of race, gender or origin.
That same Constitution guarantees the right to
become President for any Iraqi person whose parents
are Iraqi. The previous Iraqi regime attempted to
systematically oppress the non-Arab components of
Iraqi society,www.ekurd.netbut
their attempts ended with utter failure. Despite
that, there still are some who see the Iraqi
identity as an Arab identity, hence calls for the
post of the President to be filled by an Arab
person.

The Kurdistan Region
Presidency repeats its calls for commitment to the
Constitution and the principles of democracy and
federalism. Such unconstitutional statements do not
serve the mutual interests of the people of Iraq.
We reiterate our endorsement for President Jalal
Talabani for the post of President of the Republic
for a second term. We further believe that the
people of Kurdistan, as a major component of Iraq,
must be represented within the new and federal Iraq.
The Kurdistan leadership reiterates its commitment
to the Constitution when resolving the outstanding
issues, including the implementation of Article 140.
It also calls upon others to work within the
framework of Iraq’s permanent Constitution.
