BAGHDAD,
—
Former Iraqi Prime
Minister, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, a member of the
Iraqi National coalition and a potential candidate
for the Prime Minister post told Niqash.org in an
interview that he doesn't think the Iraqi Kurds want
independence.
Niqash asked Jaffari about the tension between the
Central Government and the Kurdistan government and
if could these tensions drive the Kurds to declare
an independent state.
Jaafari said "The Constitution gave the Kurds this
right, I believe that the Kurdish people, all over
Iraq, are against independence despite the fact that
many Kurds took very defensive stances in the past.
These were only reactions to the behavior of
different dictatorships. Today,www.ekurd.netKurds
stand side by side with the Iraqi people and the
Kurdish leaders occupy high-ranking posts and are
present everywhere. So there is no need for
declaring an independent state"

The
former PM Jaafari lost his support in 2006 from the
Kurdish political parties for opposing Kurdish
demands concerning oil and the financial support of
the Kurdish army (peshmerga). Eventually he lost his
position and was replaced by the current PM Maliki.
