March 8, 2010

SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The former stronghold of Talabani's PUK party, now faces competition of the Change list. In the last national Kurdish parliament elections, the Change list managed to get the majority of the seats in this province.

The famous 'hill' with Gorran's media channel KNN and headquarters was surrounded by Change list supporters late in the afternoon after the elections. "We are celebrating because we are number one in Sulaimaniyah and Kirkuk. We are very happy there was no fraud," said a supporter of Change in Sulaimaniyah.

Officials of the Change list were very happy hearing the news that the voting was not extended, since they say during the last Kurdish elections in the summer, a lot of fraud happened in an extended voting hour.

Supporters of the Gorran party
The Change list leader Nawshirwan Mustafa showed a smile on his face, when he heard the news. The KNN channel later broadcasted that the Change list has won the majority of the vote.

In the beginning the streets surrounding the main office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan were empty, but in the evening suddenly the streets were filled with cars with KDP and PUK flags. The Kurdish broadcasting channel of KurdSAT claimed the PUK won. A supporter of the PUK said he was very proud of the Iraqi Kurdish president Jalal Talabani. "Biji Mama", (long live Jalal Talabani), he shouted.

There was also celebratory firing of both supporters of the Kurdish opposition and the ruling PUK-party. Both also used fireworks to celebrate.

In the whole of Iraq parties were quick to announce their victories, which some experts see as post-election games. But the final results will become known next weekend,

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK is led by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and the Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP is led by Kurdistan region President Massoud Barzani.

Change list leader expects fraud

After having voted, the leader of Change (Gorran) Nawshirwan Mustafa told journalists that the ruling Kurdish parties have tried to carry out fraud. He hopes there is no unrest among the people.

Mustafa told journalists: "As a citizen of Iraq, I can say: I am happy with changes and reforms. The goal of our politics is to govern Iraq well."

He said its likely the governing party will commit fraud. "This will happen anyway, but in which degree I don’t know. Fraud will especially be carried out by the government parties, that are doing every thing to win today," the Gorran-leader says.
