Shandereh, Iranian Kurdistan, — Iranian
police have shot and killed a Kurdish man from
Shandereh village in the Sardasht area of West
Azerbaijan Province [Eastern Kurdistan]. Ribvar
Nossrati (Shanderehi) was instantly killed when he
was shot by a police officer.
According to a report to International Campaign for
Human Rights in Iran, Ribvan Nosrati was suspected
of smuggling goods. The incident happened near Baneh
Village in the outskirts of Baneh City. Over the
past few months, several local citizens near the
border area who have been suspected of smuggling
goods have been shot, in some cases leading to the
death of suspects.
In a separate development also related to Kurdistan,
Zeinab Jalalian, a Kurdish activist sentenced to
death, who was kept in an unknown location against
the law for the past month was tansferred to Ward
209 of Evin Prison. She was secretly moved from
Kermanshah’s correctional facilities by Kermanshah
Investigative Police Unit,www.ekurd.netwithout
requisite orders from the judge. It is not clear
where she was kept for the past month. Jalalian’s
death sentence and the irregular process of her case
has created concern among the human rights
community.
Human Rights Watch recently
published a new report in 2009 detailing the repression of Iran's
Kurdish population by the Iranian government in Iranian Kurdistan (Eastern
Kurdistan). In this report, the Human Rights Watch strongly criticizes Iranian
government for violating human rights and freedom of expression in Kurdistan.
Kurds make up approximately 7 percent of the population and live mainly in the
northwest regions of the country.
In a report released in July 2008, the human rights
organisation, Amnesty International expressed concern
about the increased repression of Kurdish Iranians,
particularly human rights defenders.
The report cited examples of religious and cultural
discrimination against the estimated 12 million
Kurds who live in Iran.
