QAMISHLI, Syrian Kurdistan,— On January 19,
2010, Khalid Mio Kanjo fled across the border from
Syrian Kurdistan to Turkey illegally. He filed a
petition for asylum at the UNHCR in Ankara, which is
to be decided upon by April 7 of this year. Kanjo is
permitted to remain in Turkey until then:
In a telephone conversation with KurdWatch on
January 28, 2010, Kanjo stated that during his
initial detention in Qamishli city he was held in a
solitary cell for seven days. The cell was so small
that he was unable to stretch out to sleep. It was
completely dark so that he could not tell the
difference between his water bottle and the bottle
he was given to urinate in. He was only allowed to
leave his cell once a day to defecate. Members of
the State Security interrogated him for a total of
four days.
During all of the interrogations, he was blindfolded
and his hands were cuffed behind his back. |

He was berated and
slapped, and his feet and other parts of his body
were beaten with cables. He was also blindfolded,
handcuffed and beaten during the ensuing two-day
interrogation by the State Security in Damascus. A
central question in these interrogations was whether
he had taken part in a demonstration in Berlin on
December 10, 2008 against the readmission agreement
between the Federal Republic of Germany and Syria.
In order to avoid further blows,www.ekurd.netKanjo
ultimately admitted to having been a participant of
the demonstration. In court he was again asked about
his participation – however, at the time he denied
it.
He also replied in the negative to the question
about a petition for asylum in Germany. One of
Kanjo’s attorneys had already informed us that
Kanjo’s participation in the demonstration on
December 10, 2008 was the subject of the hearing on
October 5, 2009.
On September 1, 2009, Khalid Mio Kanjo had been
deported from the Federal Republic of Germany to
Syria, where he was detained and charged with
knowingly spreading false or exaggerated information
abroad, pursuant to Article 287 of the Criminal
Code. His next hearing before the single military
judge in al Qamishli is scheduled for February 8,
2010.
