Kurdistan (PUK), during a visit Today to Halabja,
discussed the upcoming Kurdish elections and called
for “peaceful” and “democratic” elections. Regarding
Halabja town, Talabani said the city, which was
destroyed several times by “our enemies”, has now
been reconstructed. He told Kurdish people to be
proud for they now play a “key” role in the Middle
East and are the “defenders” of a federal and

Kurdish MPs discuss US
pullout
A veteran Kurdish MP in the Iraqi parliament has
called for talks between Baghdad and the KRG as a
fitting response to the challenges ahead, in light
of the beginning of the US withdrawal from the
country. Othman said that that the Iraqi government
had “exaggerated” the importance of the pullout, not
least because the first phase isn’t all that
important.
Meanwhile, Sahdi Berzinji, another Kurdish MP in the
Iraqi parliament, said it is too early for the
pullout because the Iraqi law enforcement forces are
not yet ready to provide all-round security.
Berzinji predicted more terrorist acts in the days
and weeks ahead. According to the security pact, US
forces are scheduled to leave Iraq by the end of
2011. In conclusion Berzinji said that America will
likely not withdraw in haste for fear of
relinquishing “control” of Iraq to other countries.
