Halabja injured to be
treated outside Iraq
Three hundred Halabja gas attack victims have been
tested by a medical team from the Iraqi health
ministry with a view of sending the most chronically
ill to Western countries for treatment. The team
tests 100 patients each day including those 305 who
were previously tested by Iranian doctors, a member
of the team Sherwan H. Salih said. He added that the
team will stay until next Thursday to see and test
all the patients. Luqman Qadir, the president of the
Halabja victims association said he met with Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki last month and asked him to
offer better treatment to those who were affected by
the chemical weapons attack of March 1988.
Female tennis championship
to start in Duhok
The Kurdistan female tennis championship is expected
to kick off on Tuesday in Duhok court complex. Head
of the Tennis Federation in Duhok, Sa'id Khalil told
AKnews that the championship is open to any club
that would like to take part. Duhok is expected to
host the Iraqi female tennis championship on 5 July
2009, Khalil said. This is a good experience for our
female players before taking part in the Iraqi
tennis championship in which the Iraqi tennis team
will be chosen to take part in the international
championships in the future, he said. The
championship is supervised by the Tennis Federation
in Duhok.
US Construction Team
supports Kurdistan Region Elections
In a statement to Sawa Radio, Head of the U. S
Regional Construction Team Lucy Tamlen said that her
team will play a crucial role in supporting the
political parties in Kurdistan Region about how to
deal with the elections, running the electoral
campaign in a proper way and that the USA will train
the elections monitors in order to activate the
concept of democracy in Kurdistan Region
institutions. Tamlen also said that the US
Construction Team support will include all the
political parties in the field of electoral
awareness.
Foundation stone of 200-bed
hospital laid in Duhok
Today on June 29, the foundation stone of 200-bed
hospital was laid in the west of Duhok province in
the presence of KRG PM Nechirvan Barzani, KRG Health
Minister Dr. Ziryan Osman, Duhok Governor Tamar
Ramazan, and several other governmental and
political leading figures in the city. The total
cost of the project is $70 million and its design is
more developed. The project also consists of several
operation rooms with supplying all sufficient
developed equipments. On the other hand, a dormitory
has been opened by KRG PM in the presence of KRG
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific
Research, KRG Health Minister Dr. Ziryan Osman and
the President of Duhok University in addition to
several tutors from the university.
2nd Duhuk trade fair opens
Activities of the 2nd Duhok Trade Fair were
inaugurated with participation of more than 60
countries from Italy and other European countries,
according to an organizer firm’s relations &
information official on Sunday. “The opening capped
immense efforts in order to get a large group of
European, Arab and Iraqi companies take part in the
five-day event,” Kameran Mari’e of Pero Crop
company, the fair organizer, told Aswat al-Iraq news
agency. The first Duhok trade fair had been held in
May 2008, also organized by the Kurdish company Pero
Crop. “The fair, to be held under the rubric
‘enhancing economic infrastructure and activating of
trade in Kurdistan are our duty’, will have
companies displaying their products in the fields of
home appliances, construction, furniture,
foodstuffs, electricity and pharmaceuticals,” Mari’e
added.
Kurdistani Alliance: Some
lawmakers have chauvinistic stances from Kurdistan
Region Constitution
Kurdistan Alliance Bloc in a statement described the
stances of some lawmakers from the Constitution of
Kurdistan Region as chauvinistic and a dangerous
step on the future of Iraq. The statement was read
by Khalid Shwani, the Lawmaker in Kurdistan Alliance
bloc in a press conference on Monday, June 29, and
said that there is no any contradiction in any item
between the Draft Law of Kurdistan Region and the
Federal one and that the stances of those lawmakers
are not constitutional but an expression of their
partiality against the Kurdish people. The statement
also said that Kurdistan Region Constitution
expresses the will of the Kurdish people and the
Kurdish parties that represent the majority of the
Kurdish people and keep its constitutional rights.
The statement also said that July, 25, 2009, will be
a national day when the Kurdish people will vote in
favor of Kurdistan Region Constitution and another
step towards completion the Federal States
institutions.
“US will still help Iraqi
army”
Sulaimaniyah : KRG Peshmarga minister said that US
forces will still help the Iraqi army after the
pullout from the cities. The minister, Jaafar Sheikh
Mustafa, said the KRG supports the
Baghdad-Washington security pact which underpins the
gradual withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. Asked if
the duties of the Peshmarga forces will change after
the pullout, Mustafa replied that America does not
maintain significant military forces in the
Kurdistan Region, and on that basis the role of the
Peshmerga will not change. Mustafa added that
Peshmarga forces are a component of the Iraqi
defense system and as such they are ready to help
the Iraqi army as and when required. Mustafa
predicted that security would deteriorate in the
immediate aftermath of the US forces pullout but
this will prove to be a “temporary” phenomenon.
According to the security pact, US forces are
scheduled to leave Iraq by the end of 2011.
IHEC issues statistics
regarding elections in Kurdistan region
In a press statement, the Independent High Electoral
Commission (IHEC) issued statistics regarding the
parliamentary and presidential elections in
Kurdistan region, which will be carried out on July
25th, 2009. In the beginning, the statistics
mentioned that Kurdistan region Parliament includes
111 seats, including 5 seats for Turkmen, 5 seats
for Chaldo-Assyrians and 1 seat for Armenian.
“Number of approved political blocs was 41,
including 5 alliances. The number of nominees for
parliamentary elections was 527 candidates and 5
candidates for the presidential elections”, the
statement said.
Regarding the registration centers in Kurdistan
region, the statement mentioned “there are 84
centers in Kurdistan region: 16 in Duhok, 31 in
Erbil and 37 in Sulaimaniyah, while there were 5
centers in Baghdad: 2 in Rasafa District, 2 in Karkh
District and one in the green Zone.” As for the
electoral centers, “there are 1149 centers
distributed in Kurdistan region as follows: Duhok
221 centers, Erbil 446 centers and Sulaimaniyah 482
centers. No electoral centers were assigned outside
the region until now”, the statement added...
