SULAIMANIYAH,
Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — A senior member of the
Da'wa party described the Kurdistan regional
constitution as "illegal" and a "prejudgment" on
article 140 of the Iraqi constitution.
In response, Pishtiwan Ahmed, a member of the
regions and provinces committee in the Iraqi
parliament, told Aknews that defying the
constitution by some politicians is just propaganda
aimed at blocking the progress of the Kurdistan
regional constitution.
The Kurdistan regional constitution is legal and the
areas referred to as "Kurdish" have been outlined
according to the history and geography of the
Kurdistan Region,www.ekurd.net
all of the clauses being
compatible with the Iraqi constitution, he aid.

Ali Adib, senior Da'wa official |
Earlier, senior Da'wa
official Ali Adib told Radio Sawa that "some
disputed areas have been incorporated into the
Kurdistan Region."
The constitution is, therefore, a prejudgment on
article 140 and has no value, according to Adib.
“The Kurdistan regional constitution is violating
article 140 of the Iraqi constitution and as such
has to be referred to the Iraqi Supreme Court.
Article 140 can not be dealt with through the
Kurdistan regional constitution,” Adib said.
After the fall of the Iraqi regime in 2003, the
parliament of the Kurdistan region formed a
committee to prepare the Kurdistan regional
constitution in light of the new situation in the
region and the new Iraqi constitution.
The committee accomplished its mission in August
2006 and the final draft – which is comprised of 112
articles - was eventually approved last Wednesday.
On Wednesday (June 24),www.ekurd.net
the Kurdistan region’s
parliament
passed the
draft constitution with an overwhelming majority.
Ninety-six parliamentarians out of a total of 97 who
attended today’s session have voted in favor of the
bill.
The constitution was read in Arabic and Kurdish.
Seven Kurdish lawmakers
withdrew from the
parliament’s session protesting the
attempt to approve the region’s constitution and to
hold referendum on it along with the parliamentary
elections.
Sulaimaniyah's provincial council on June 18,www.hawlati.net

on the president of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani,www.ekurd.net
to postpone the
ratification of the draft constitution and to put it
to a public referendum.
