Kurdistan president urges higher security committee not to interfere in elections  27.6.2009

ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — President of Iraq’s Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani on Saturday called on the Higher Security Committee not to interfere in the upcoming elections, but to protect polling centers.

“President Massoud Barzani met today with the Higher Committee for Elections and asked them not to interfere in elections…,” according to a statement published Saturday on the official web site of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).


The president urged the committee to protect voting centers and to provide all facilities for election monitors.

Kurdistan parliament
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has set July 25 as the date for parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region. The elections will coincide with the presidential polls.

A total of 507 candidates from several political blocs and five alliances are competing for 111 seats in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

Parliamentary polls in the region were scheduled to be held on May 19,
