Kurdistan: KDP security forces "Asayish" collected Leven magazine to destroy  26.6.2009

ERBIL-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The last issue of Leven (Livin) magazine has been collected by the (KDP) Asayish forces to burn on Tuesday, stated a communiqué issued by the Livin on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Kurdish security forces, known as Asayish, of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Massoud Barzani, the current president of Kurdistan region, collected the last issue of Livin magazine to destroy them.

The Asayish forces, according to the communiqué, barged into the local bookshop, known as Metyni Ek, in Zakho, after threatening its owner, they collected all the copies of issue 94 of Leven (Livin) to destroy. The 18 year old Bawar Ahmed Miqdad Berwari,
www.ekurd.net the brother of the bookshop owner was also detained for 24 hours for the “crime” of selling Leven (Livin), the communiqué reported.
        

The last issue of Leven (Livin) magazine has been collected by the (KDP) Asayish forces to burn on Tuesday.
Livin: Barzani’s promise did not last one hour

The communiqué stated that this occurred while the president of Kurdistan and the head of KDP, Massoud Barzani had a meeting with the staff of media outlets promising to stand behind them.

“Alas, the promise of the President of KRG [Massoud Barzani] could not even last one hour,” the communiqué stated.

Barzani’s invitation to the meeting was rejected by independent media outlets. In a joined communiqué Awene, Hawlati and Leven (Livin) rejected Barzani’s invitation. There are no any influential independent media outlets in KDP-controlled areas; all sponsored by political groups.

Livin is an independent magazine published in Sulaimaniyah, which already has lost one journalist Soran Mama Hama, who was assassinated in Kirkuk. In addition, the PUK Asayish revealed an assassination attempt on the life of its chief editor,
www.ekurd.net Ahmed Mira. The network of assassin moved to the PUK area from KDP-controlled areas, but they were captured by PUK Asayish and they are under investigation.
