Talabani, Barzani discuss ways to render electoral process success

SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Tuesday discussed with Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani in Sulaimaniyah means of rendering the electoral process in Kurdistan a success, according to a statement of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

“Talabani discussed at his residence in Sulaimaniyah on Tuesday (June 23) with Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani the latest developments in the Iraqi and regional arena and means of rendering the electoral process in the region a success,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The two discussed ways to foster relations between the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP),” it noted.

They also touched upon the necessary measures for stepping up the Kurdistan Region Parliamentary Elections and supporting the Kurdistani List in that crucial and considerable election. 

The Independent High Electoral Commission IHEC has set July 25 as the date for parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region.

The elections will coincide with the presidential polls.

A total of 507 candidates from several political blocs and alliances are competing for 111 seats in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

Parliamentary polls in the region were scheduled to be held on May 19,
