966 Baghdadis to vote in Kurdistan’s polls  22.6.2009

ERBIL-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The head of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) on Monday said that 966 voters from Baghdad will participate in the upcoming parliamentary polls in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, scheduled for next month.

“A total of 966 voters from Baghdad have signed up to vote in the upcoming elections in Kurdistan,” Faraj al-Haidari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

A special voting that includes security and army personnel will be held on July 23, Haidari noted.

The IHEC has set July 25 as the date for parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region. The elections will coincide with the presidential polls.

On Monday June 22, the parliamentary elections campaign in Kurdistan region was started. There are 24 lists competing on 111 seats in Kurdistan region parliament,
www.ekurd.net including 11 seats for minorities.  A total of 507 candidates from several political blocs and five alliances are competing for 111 seats in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

In a press statement on Saturday June 20th, al-Haidari had said that the electoral campaigns of the parliamentary elections in Kurdistan region will be started on Monday June 22nd and will be stopped 48 hours before carrying out the elections. Al-Haidari added “the political blocs have to visit the municipalities in the provinces to assign the places of their electoral campaign posters.

Using the buildings of mosques and official institutions is prevented. The electoral posters must be placed on special boards and not on the walls. We will take our measures against anyone violates the commission’s instructions.” The commission announced that the media campaign for the nominees of Kurdistan region presidency was started on June 17th,
