Kurdistan's presidential candidate Halo Ibrahim Ahmed calls for TV debate with Massoud Barzani  22.6.2009

SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — Kurdistan’s presidential candidate Halo Ibrahim Ahmed on Sunday urged the current region’s president, Massoud Barzani, to go head-to-head with him in a TV debate during their election campaigns.

“The debate should outline the agenda of the candidates for the region’s presidency…,” Ahmed, who stands as a candidate for the Taqaddom List,

Helo Ibrahim Ahmad is the secretary general of “Al Taqadom” party which was founded early this year, located in Sulaimaniyah city.

Ahmed said that the president’s agreement to hold the debate will represent “a significant step towards transparency and democracy in the Kurdistan region.”

Massoud Barzani, the current President of the autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq's north
Born in 1951, Halow is the son of a Kurdish political activist, Ibrahim Ahmed, and a brother-in-law of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

He lived in Sweden and Britain where he worked with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) but he was dismissed last year for inciting to form a bloc inside the Union.

Halo Ibrahim Ahmed , the son of the late Ibrahim Ahmed, a famous 20th century Kurdish politician.

In 1976, he joined the Kurdistan Toilers’ Party and immigrated to Europe,

In 1991, he returned to the Kurdistan region and founded a number of student and civil society organizations.

Presidential polls in Iraq’s Kurdistan are scheduled to take place on July 25.
