Electoral campaigns in Kurdistan region to
be started on June 22nd

ERBIL-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', —
Faraj al-Haidari, the head of the Independent High
Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq said in a press
statement on Saturday June 20th that the electoral
campaigns of the parliamentary elections in
Kurdistan region will be started on Monday June
22nd.
The commission announced that the media campaign for
the nominees of Kurdistan region presidency was
started on June 17th.
• IHEC receives candidate list for Kurdistan vote
Names of candidates for upcoming legislative
elections in Kurdistan have been submitted to Iraq's
electoral watchdog in Baghdad for review, according
to a report in Arabic on an Iraqi Kurdish website.
Iraq's Independent High Elections Commission (IHEC)
has received the list of candidates vying for seats
in the Kurdistan Parliament in next month polls,
according to a report on PUK Media,www.ekurd.net
a media organ of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan of
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.
The IHEC will vet the candidates to ensure that they
meet the qualifications for the office, said Hamdiya
al-Husayni, a member of the IHEC executive council.
Names of candidates are to be announced on Saturday
in a press conference in Baghdad, al-Husayni added.
The IHEC has set July 25 as the date for
parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region. The
elections will coincide with the presidential polls.
A total of 509 candidates from 20 political blocs
and five alliances encompassing 15 blocs are
competing for 111 seats in the upcoming
parliamentary polls.
• IHEC to issue voter information ID
The IHEC of Iraq finished the final design,
preparations and instructions of the voter
information ID, which will be distributed to the
Iraqi citizens (voters) on July 2009.
In a press statement, the IHEC said that this ID
will be distributed through the ration card agents
and will include voter information (triple name,
numbers of polling unit and center... etc) and
instructions for the voter, which tell him the way
of acting if there was any wrong information.
Bearing in mind, this is the first ID to be issued
in Iraq and include accurate information about the
voter. The electoral commission will start an
educating campaign regarding this ID in the coming
days.
• Kurdistan President Barzani meets Kurdistan
Region Election Candidates
Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani met
Wednesday with the heads of all political factions
and candidates standing in the upcoming general
elections in the Kurdistan Region.
The meeting focused on the general elections, which
are scheduled for 25 July 2009, in which voters will
elect 111 members for the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament
and a President for the Kurdistan Region.
After welcoming the guests, President Barzani
expressed his desire that free and transparent
elections will be held. He said that this election
is a good opportunity for the people of the
Kurdistan Region to show to the world their true
colour.
He added that although there are understandably
differences of opinion,www.ekurd.net
something must bind us
all together. “The safeguarding of the interests of
the Kurdistan people must come first,” said the
President.
President Barzani said that our people should be
proud of this democratic process. On monitoring the
election process, the President said that “we
ourselves have asked representatives from the
European Union, other European countries and
international organisations to come and monitor our
elections.”
On allegations that some candidates have been
threatened and warned against standing for election,
the President cautioned that no one has the right to
block any candidates. He also reiterated that
according to the elections law, everyone has the
right to stand for elections as per the regulations
of the elections law.
The President further added that even after the
elections are over, we “should all stand united
together and attempt to introduce the reforms that
we have all been talking about.”
On the participation of members of other communities
in the elections, President Barzani said that
Turkomans, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Syriacs and
Armenians all have important roles to play in the
rebuilding of the Kurdistan Region and Christians
will vote for their own candidates. Minority groups
have been allocated a quota of 11 seats in the
parliament.
President Barzani also denied accusations that the
Kurdistan Regional Government has recently dismissed
some employees based on their political
affiliations. He stated that people should not be
sacked based on their political affiliations.
Several other participants in the meeting expressed
their views and discussed different aspects of the
elections. Kurdistan Region Vice President Kosrat
Rasul also attended this meeting.
