PUK members consider casting vote for Nawshirwan's Change List in the upcoming Kurdistan's parliamentary election  17.6.2009

June 17, 2009

SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — Some members of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's party Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are considering casting their votes for Change "Goran" List, which was formed by PUK’s former second in command, Nawshirwan Mustafa.

Change List is mainly composed of leading members of PUK who have left the party and some independent figures to participate in the July 25 parliamentary elections.

As part of a strategic pact that was agreed upon a few years ago,
www.ekurd.net PUK and Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP will run for the election in a joint list. Both PUK and KDP get equal number of parliamentary seats, according to the agreement.

Now that Nawshirwan Mustafa has formed a list outside his former party, there are worries that he might attract most or some of PUK’s voters and negatively affect the votes of PUK and KDP.

Nawshirwan Mustafa, prominent former PUK leader and co-founder of the PUK party.
The strategic pact between PUK and KDP is an assurance that no matter how many votes PUK can get in the election the party will divide the secured parliamentary seats with KDP. This idea has encouraged some members of PUK to consider voting for Goran List.

“The (members) say ‘we have guaranteed that we will get half of the parliament seats that our joint list with KDP get,
www.ekurd.net then we will vote for Change List because there are still PUK members’” a source told Rudaw.

Nawshirwan Mustafa, a former deputy leader and co-founder of PUK plans to head a political group of independents called "Change" in the region's upcoming parliamentary elections. He left Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party (PUK) in December 2006, now owns a powerful media company, Wisha, the company, which includes a television station, newspaper and website, is now independent and highly critical of local leaders.
