New Radio "Curdonia" focuses on Kurdistan elections  13.6.2009

June 13, 2009

ERBIL-Hewler,Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — The new Kurdish radio station Curdonia will focus itself on the Kurdish elections in 25 July. After September the radio will aim more on cultural, youth and specific political issues. Radio Curdonia also wants to broadcast in Kurmanji and Zazaki in the future. Currently their websites and broadcasts are in Sorani, Dutch and English. They also broadcast music 24 hours a day.

Until now Radio Curdonia organized live radio debates about the coming Kurdish elections with both pro-government and pro-opposition supporters.

They also interviewed the presidential candidate Kamal Mirawdeli , American analyst Michael Rubin and Kurdish showbiz star Dashni Marud.

According to A. Daudey the goal of the radio station is on a strong cultural, social, dynamic and young identity. "The idea started several years ago, but as you know we are still students, we lacked the skills and the financial resources for setting up this, and the timing was also an issue crucial. We wanted to be prepared as much as possible and not start a half-baked project,
www.ekurd.net like many Kurdish projects are in Europe."

Daudey also claims that the radio is completely independent. "We didn't get any financial help", but still Radio Curdonia is looking for financial support of Dutch government agencies. "But we wanted first to prove that we are able to become self-sufficient."

Despite the set-up of the radio station, they only have basic radio training. "We have a plan to create a professional staff, that can also represent the Kurdish community in other Dutch Media outlets." Next to Radio Curdonia,
www.ekurd.net there are already several Kurdish radio stations, like Radio Nawa, but Daudey claims they have a different target group and aim of work. The future will tell if Radio Curdonia won't become a 'half-baked project'. For now, one can listen to their programs on their homepage here.
