Electricity production
increases in Kurdistan
The Iraqi minister of electricity in Iraq’s
Kurdistan on Wednesday reported a significant
increase in the production of electricity in the
region.
“Power generating stations and the national grid
will provide us with 650 megawatts of electricity in
June and 800 megawatts in July and August,” Minister
Hoshyar Suweili said in a press conference. The
minister explained that the boost in production will
generate electricity for 23 hours a day.
Residents of the provinces of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah
currently receive electricity for 14-16 hours a day.
They rely on generators for nearly seven hours a
day.
Electricity supply will be
23 hrs/day in Kurdistan region
Hoshiyar Sowaily, KRG minister of electricity
promised in a press conference held in Erbil on
Wednesday May 27th, 2009 to supply the citizens of
Kurdistan region with 23 hours of electricity daily
in this summer, after they were supplied with 15
hours in last summer.
“Great development took place in producing the
electricity power in Kurdistan region in comparison
to the previous years. The available power will be
650 mega watt in June via the power stations in
Kurdistan region and the national network”, Sowaily
said.
He expressed his hope “the electricity power will be
increased to 800 mega watt in July and August, but
it will be decreased to 750 mega watt in September.”
He expected “the electricity institutes in Erbil and
Sulaimani provinces will provide the citizens with
about 14-16 hours of electricity daily, while the
special generators will provide electricity for
another 7 hours.”
Kurdistan’s registration
centers receive 4,000 voters
A total of 4,000 voters out of Kurdistan’s total
population of 2 million people have been to the
region’s registration centers ahead of the
parliamentary and presidential polls, scheduled to
take place in July. “So far, only 4,000 citizens
have been to the registration centers in the
region’s three provinces,” the head of Kurdistan’s
constituency, Hamdiya al-Hosni, told Aswat al-Iraq
news agency.
“Those who do not head to the centers will be
deprived from participating in the elections,” Hosni
warned.
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has
set July 25 as the date for parliamentary elections
in the Kurdistan region. The elections will coincide
with the presidential polls. A total of 509
candidates from 20 political blocs and five
alliances encompassing 15 blocs are competing for
111 seats in the upcoming parliamentary polls.
Kurdistan & Iraq forces in
joint operations
In implementation to recent agreements between the
central government and Kurdistan regional
governments and in order to control security in
Diyala, Iraqi Army and Kurdistan regional police
carried out joint security operations and patrols. A
number of wanted were arrested during operations
while weapons and ammunitions were seized.
Operations included mainly Diyala City and Sheikh
Baba village.
2nd Battalion Chief in Rapid Reaction Forces of the
Army’s 1st Division Mohammad Ahnad noted that
operations have been ongoing for 20 days now.
Germyan Police Chief Major Riyad Abbas stressed the
importance of enhancing cooperation with the Iraqi
Army and police forces in Kurdistan.
For his part, 2nd Battalion Chief in the fourth
Brigade of Iraq’s Army first division Major Ali
pointed out to coexistence between Arabs and Kurds.
Stability and fighting terrorism have become the aim
of all Iraqis especially in versatile Diyala which
suffered during war to fight away discord and
preserve coexistence between Iraqi families.
