SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', —
Sheik Ja’far Sheikh Mustafa, a member
of the leadership council of the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan (PUK) party, told Rudaw that Nawshirwan Mustafa
made a huge mistake by creating an independent list
to run in the Kurdistan parliamentary election that
is scheduled to be held on July 25.
“Kak Nawshirwan (Mustafa) made a huge mistake by
creating an (election) list,” Sheikh Ja’far said. “I
believe that this list will not obtain the numbers
of seats that they already have in parliament and
provincial councils.”
“They (Mustafa’s list) will not even gain five
(parliamentary) seats,” Sheikh Ja’far told Rudaw
predicting the result of the elections. |

Sheikh Jaf’ar didn’t
deny that PUK has been hurt by Mustafa’s decision to
have a separate list, “it is like having two hands
and amputate one of them,” he said.
But at the same time he criticized Mustafa for not
staying within the party, “If Nawshirwan (Mustafa)
had (implemented) the reform and house-cleaning
program that he talks about, mot than 70 percent of
the party would have (supported) him.”
Sheikh Jaf’ar believes that by leaving PUK
Nawshirwan Mustafa has lost any power of brings
change. He said when Nawshirwan Mustafa was PUK
deputy secretary general he could not bring changes
to the party, “What can he do with a few people?
Even if they get a maximum of 10 (parliamentary)
seats,www.ekurd.net
which they will never
see, what could they do? What decisions can they
make? What can they change?”
Predicting the results of the July elections, Sheikh
Ja’far said that he believed the joint list of PUK
and the Kurdistan Democratic Party will gain more
than 70 parliamentary seats.
The PUK is leaded by Iraqi president Jalal Talabani.
Nawshirwan Mustafa, a former deputy leader and
co-founder of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's
party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, says he
plans to head a political group of independents
called "Change" in the region's upcoming
parliamentary elections. He left Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan party (PUK)
in December 2006.
Nawshirwan says he plans to head a political group
of independents called
"Change" in the region's
upcoming parliamentary elections.
"We want to change this political system," said
Mustafa, adding he would campaign on promises to
battle corruption and improve the lives of the
region's population.
